How to choose the right credit card for shopping
The key to choosing the right credit card for shopping is you — how you spend and the rewards you find most valuable. To begin, you might want to review your recent bank and credit card statements to help identify your top spending categories. Then, you can screen for rewards and perks.
What type of credit card rewards do you want?
If you spend at multiple stores, a cash-back or points-earning shopping credit card might be a good fit. Consider a cash-back credit card for straightforward redemption options. A points-earning rewards card can take more effort to optimize, but you may get more value from your rewards, especially if your card lets you transfer your points to airline and hotel loyalty programs.
Some consumers can benefit from co-branded credit cards. If you tend to do most of your shopping with one store — say Amazon or Costco — a store-specific credit card could be attractive. Finally, if your motto leans towards “anywhere but here,” you might prefer a card that earns miles with your favorite airline or points with your favorite hotel chain. These cards earn rewards that can translate to free flights and hotel rooms, among other perks.
What other credit card benefits will you use?
On top of rewards on spending, look for other shopping-related perks. For example, some cards cover lost or stolen items and repairs for damaged purchases with a perk called purchase protection, typically for a short time after you buy the item. Make sure you read the fine print to understand what is covered.
If you buy a product that comes with a warranty, you might be able to protect it for longer with an extended warranty from your credit card. Again, read the terms and conditions carefully, but you can expect to extend the life of the manufacturer’s warranty.
If you have a major shopping expense coming up, you can look for a card with a 0% introductory APR on purchases. With this benefit, you can pay off your balance over time without any interest charges. You will still need to make at least your minimum payment every month, and you should make a plan to pay off the whole balance before your regular APR kicks in.
Other credit card benefits may include cell phone protection and annual credits to help cover eligible spending.
Tips to optimize your shopping credit card rewards
To optimize your shopping credit card rewards, focus your spending and be diligent about your finances.
- Align rewards with your goals. When considering cards, look for rewards that fit your lifestyle.
- Track bonuses and spending categories. Make emails from your credit card appear as “important” in your inbox. This can help you sign up for bonus offers and activate rotating categories on time to avoid missing valuable rewards.
- Try to pay your balance in full each month. Carrying a balance means paying interest, which can outweigh any cash back or points you earn.
- Explore redemption options carefully. Not all redemption methods are created equal. Do the math and see which reward redemptions give you the most bang for your buck.
Methodology
Our money and data analytics teams evaluated over 30 credit cards. We then narrowed down our list of the best shopping cards by giving them a star rating out of five, based on the following factors and our editorial judgment:
Rewards value (25%)
Many credit cards for shopping earn rewards, but not all credit card points and miles are worth the same amount. We used spending data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and estimates of rewards values from The Points Guy to determine which cards dole out the best rewards value.
Sign-up bonus value (25%)
Many rewards cards offer bonus cash back, points or miles to consumers who spend a certain amount in their first months with the card. We calculated how much those bonuses are worth using points valuations from The Points Guy, and boosted cards that offer more value.
Pricing and fees (25%)
Cards with no annual fee, no foreign transaction fee and competitive variable APRs received a boost compared to cards with higher fees and rates.
Benefits (20%)
Cards that offer benefits such as cell phone protection, purchase protection, extended warranty and a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers received a boost.
Annual credits and bonuses (5%)
Credit cards that come with credits and bonuses for spending in categories including groceries, dining, entertainment and gas received a boost.
What didn’t make the cut
When reviewing all of the possible cards for our list, we put each one up against the same exacting standards. The cards below may be a great choice for some, but there needs to be a close alignment between spending habits and card benefits for these cards to make sense.

- Discover it? Chrome * The information for the Discover it? Chrome has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. : Discover’s signature credit card has solid rotating 5% cash back categories, but 5% earning is capped and most spending earns 1% cash back. Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
You should consider a credit card for shopping if you can benefit from the card’s rewards structure and other benefits. For instance, if you’re an avid bargain hunter who shops at a variety of stores, you might appreciate a card that offers cash back on every purchase — effectively lowering the price you pay for each item. If you do most of your shopping at a single store, a store-specific shopping credit card could help you save. If you carry a balance on your credit card, though, interest charges can quickly outweigh rewards value.
When you shop using a cash back rewards credit card, you’ll earn a percentage of all qualifying purchases as cash back. The cash back percentage will vary depending on the card and its rewards program terms. Your cash back will generally accumulate in your account. When you’re ready to redeem, you may have several options. Common redemption methods include getting cash to your bank account, applying credits to your card statement, using rewards at checkout or booking travel.
Points-based rewards credit cards let you earn points when you use them to shop. Some cards offer a flat points-per-dollar rate for all purchases — say 2x points — while other cards award points based on spending categories — say 5x points for travel purchases, 2x points on groceries and gas, and 1x points on all other purchases. Points accumulate in your account. You can then redeem points based on your card’s terms. Options may include cash, statement credits, gift cards and travel.
Using a credit card for shopping won’t negatively impact your credit score in and of itself. What does impact your credit score is how you handle your credit. For instance, if you miss payments and continuously carry a balance that’s a significant portion of your available credit, your credit score can suffer. Making on-time payments and keeping your card balances low can help you improve your score.
You could apply for multiple credit cards to maximize your shopping rewards, but you might want to space them out. Having multiple inquiries for credit cards on your credit report in a short period could make you appear as a higher lending risk. So, you may be approved for multiple cards in your pursuit of shopping reward bliss, but you might start to see less desirable terms, including higher APRs. You’re better off only applying for the credit you truly need.
