Given Rob Lowe’s extensive body of work — from the cult-favorite “St. Elmo’s Fire” in 1985 to “Unstable” and “911: Lone Star” today — it’s hard to believe the actor is only 59 years old. Yet, simultaneously, we’re all asking ourselves, how the heck does he look so young?
When we had the chance to ask Lowe that very question, he was quick to share. For one, there’s his diet. “There was a moment in my mid-30s where I thought, ‘You know what? I cannot eat like a teenager anymore,’” Lowe says. “I’ve been working with Atkins now for years, and that all was born organically out of me living the Atkins lifestyle. It’s very simple. It’s just low carb, lots of healthy proteins and cutting the sugar. I wouldn’t be an Atkins spokesperson if I didn’t love the products so much. They’re insanely good.”
Lowe is always exploring different ways to boost his health and vitality, and his newest obsession is cold plunges. Meditation is also a part of his regimen these days. “Everybody for years told me to do it,” he explains. “I finally started, and guess what? It’s worked for me. Finding things that one can do alone in their own company, where you can be with your thoughts, is really important for spiritual mental health.”
When it comes to his longevity and, um, perhaps why he looks so good, Lowe has that equation down pat. “Really, my routine has been the same for years: I don’t drink alcohol,” he says. “I’ve been sober for 35 years, so I’m already ahead of the game there. And I love being active — hiking, surfing, golf, paddle ball, tennis, the gym. It’s consistency more than anything.”
Below, Lowe, who was recently tapped to host Fox’s quiz show “The Floor,” shares his top wellness essentials.
Lowe cites this weighted sleep mask as being one of his must-haves. “I wear it every night, every flight and every day in the car when I’m being driven to the set,” he says. Slightly weighted, this adjustable, ergonomically designed mask has a light-blocking nose piece that ensures a completely dark sleep.
When he has a craving for sweets, Lowe turns to Atkins for healthy alternatives that taste delicious. “I’m a big chocolate-peanut-butter-cup guy. My life hack is to put them in the freezer,” says Lowe. “I [also] take that to the movies and have that instead of a Reese’s — I game the system!” With just 1 gram of net carbs and zero sugar, the cups have nearly 8,000 Amazon reviews for a reason.??
How does Lowe get his hair looking picture-perfect? “My hair isn’t easy to tame, but this is one product that I use daily, and it holds,” he says. “A huge plus is that Oribe has the?travel sizes too, which is so rare in a lot of the brands I like.” Great for adding volume and texture, the invisible spray also absorbs oil at the roots.
A regular golfer, Lowe loves spending his days on the links, and the PXG clubs are by far his favorite. “These are the best clubs in the world,” he says. “They’re not cheap, but they’re worth every penny! They are the most forgiving clubs that will give you the most distance, with the most feel. And the drivers and irons are as good as the woods and the putters. Their balls are great too.” Founded by philanthropist Bob Parsons, the brand offers everything from top-of-the-line wedges and putters to apparel. If you’re searching for a golf glove, this cabretta leather one is available in two colors.?
Fellas, listen up, Lowe’s got a grooming tip for you. “It’s hard to find a good old-school beard trimmer that’s also small, compact and has everything you need,” he says. “My beard grows fast, so I have to whip my trimmer out constantly.” With more than 8,400 positive Amazon reviews, the Wahl trimmer comes with four cutting combs, a rotary motor that can be used to clip and trim and detachable blades for easy (and safe!) cleaning.?
We’re sensing a trend here: Lowe’s second Atkins pick is another sweet treat. “I have a late-night sweet tooth, so instead of reaching for a pint of ice cream, I go for an Atkins Milk Chocolate Shake, which are best after being in the freezer for a bit.”?Available as a pack of four, the Atkins Milk Chocolate Shakes have just 2 grams of carbs, 1 gram of sugar and a whopping 15 grams of protein.?
Lowe’s fitness training tool of choice? Katalyst, an at-home electro muscle stimulation (EMS) technology that delivers major results in a short amount of time. “I use it twice a week for 20 minutes. It works you so hard that your muscles take that long to recover,” says Lowe. “I love it because, in 20 minutes, it gives you the equivalent of a two-hour workout at the gym.” Katalyst comes with a suit, base layers to wear underneath and a power pack that delivers commands to the coordinating Katalyst App, which then sends impulses to specific muscle groups throughout the workout.
