The Olympic Stadium saw its first action of Rio 2016 Wednesday, two days before Friday's Opening Ceremony.

It played host to two women's football matches. The first saw Sweden play South Africa, with the 60,000-seater stadium eerily quiet for the group stage tie.

South Africa's Stephanie Malherbe, right wearing the No. 7 jersey, had both her boyfriend and big sister in the stands cheering her on. Unfortunately for them, South Africa lost 1-0 to Sweden.

The crowd, and noise levels, increased for Brazil's match against China. Although the crowd was passionate, the stadium in the Engenhao neighborhood of Rio was far from full. Games organizers told CNN 37,000 tickets for the event had been sold.

Monica opened the scoring for Brazil in the first half, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Brazil eventually ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, thanks in part to the performance of Marta. She promises to be one of the stars of the Games for the hosts, having been named FIFA World Player of the Year on five occasions.

Elsewhere, the Olympic torch arrived in Rio via boat. It's passage through the region was greeted with protests by people angry with Brazil's hosting of the Games.
